Our very high voltage pulse Marx generator, which can create discharges in the air up to 1.6 MV, has benefited from the addition of automatic auxiliary functions, as well as the addition of highly accurate automatic charging and triggering modes.

The aim is to make this tool, which is essential for research, development, and certification work, even more reproducible for NF C 17-102 testing of our lightning rod prototypes. This modernization also brings greater operational efficiency by simultaneously and automatically multiplying the actions of a single operator, who can focus on the quality of the tests carried out in complete autonomy. We are very proud of these improvements, which were developed in-house and tailored to our specific needs.

It is the result of a long period of reflection and decades of experience in the testing laboratory.

Over the coming months, we will continue our efforts to modernize the LiRi LAB by focusing on other parts of our laboratory. This will enable us to open the door internally to other types of very high voltage tests (NF EN 62561-1, NF EN 62561-6, IEC/TS 62561-8) that are part of the normative certification process for lightning protection components.

After lightning strike tests on electric vehicle charging stations for the company Indelec Mobility, and certification tests of insulating stands for external lightning protection installations for the company Constructions Tubulaires de l’Artois, LiRi LAB continues his adventure off the beaten track of Early Streamer Emission Air Terminals (E.S.E.A.T.) with isolation measurements of airfield runway edge beacons for the company Delta Box based in Douai (North, France).

These beacons are notably used in series in so-called “6.6 Amps” current loops to mark the edges of airport runways or taxiways. The electrical insulation of these loops is a concern for airport operators because they can be powered over long distances at up to over 4500 V AC. Indeed, excessively large earth leakage current losses are detrimental and can interfere with the automatic insulation measurement systems of the runway edge loop power system. These beacons, elements of the “6.6” loop, are therefore affected by this problem and must therefore present the highest possible insulation resistance. The company Delta Box, which has already carried out insulation resistance measurements in another laboratory, asked the LiRi LAB to validate a measurement protocol and to carry them out up to 5000 Volts, in alternative and direct voltage on a runway edge beacon designed by Delta Box. These products meet in particular recommendations of the American Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.) and the French Civil Aviation Authority (D.G.A.C.), as well as the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (I.C.A.O.) on the design of airfields.

These measurements are difficult to carry out due to the very low values of the leakage currents to earth. Particular care must be taken to measure a few microamps, or even a few nanoamps, without being disturbed by the electrical environment of the laboratory or the building.

The laboratory environment was therefore modified to recreate a test setup in agreement with the company Delta Box, with the aim of being as close as possible to the configuration of the installed equipment, while being able to measure with complete immunity very low earth leakage current values.

After joint validation of the test protocol with the customer, the measurements were successfully carried out thanks to very satisfactory values, of the order of approximately 6nA under 5000 Volts, which corresponds to an insulation resistance of approximately 800 GigaOhms.

Once again, the laboratory took great pleasure in participating and developing the measurement benches necessary for the completion of this service in a field of application different from that of lightning protection.

A technological tool specializing in lightning studies and protection systems, the LIRI is also a formidable showcase for French know-how.

The violence and speed of a lightning discharge make it a natural event whose mechanisms and specific features are difficult to understand. And yet, it’s at the heart of many news headlines. Lightning strike records are being broken all the time. Accidentology is progressing statistically. The study of lightning physics and the ongoing development of protection systems are a real priority.

LIRI regularly receives visits from foreign scientists and engineers. This enables them to benefit from the research center’s resources (notably its High Voltage Laboratory) and to gain a better understanding of the lightning phenomenon.

As lightning specialists in their own countries, our visitors find at LIRI several R&D engineers with remarkable experience in this field… sometimes even discovering wonderful human stories. Such was the case this week with a visit to LIRI from a partner from Panama… who studied in France for 5 years at an engineering school in Lille. And who, at the time, unknowingly sat on the same benches as one of LIRI’s scientific directors!

Sharing knowledge, establishing international research programs and contributing to scientific information are LIRI’s key missions. When this sharing also takes place in the context of wonderful human encounters, the mission is perfectly fulfilled!

Lightning protection systems design requires a perfect understanding of lightning phenomenology and its occurrence depending on seasons and regions. Lightning maps are instrumental to assess the lightning risks for a structure or persons: obviously, risks increase with higher lightning frequency.

Lightning map are a key data. The “keraunic level” was initially referred to. It is measured by the number of days per year the lightning has been heard. This first measurement methodology lacks both precision and reliability.

With the meteo satellites era, it has been replaced by the “lightning density” (number of discharges/year/km²). “One of the first global maps of lightning activity was published in 2001 with data from the Optical Transient Detector (OTD) on the commercial OrbView-1 satellite and the Lightning Image Sensor (LIS) on NASA’s TRMM satellite. Two decades later, a second LIS mounted on the International Space Station (ISS) is adding to long-term records and making newer, better maps of global lightning activity.

The map above draws on observations from multiple sensors—the ISS LIS, the TRMM LIS, and OTD. The TRMM LIS collected data between 1997 and 2015; OTD was operational between 1995 and 2000; and ISS LIS has been flying since 2017. Scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Alabama-Huntsville published an updated map in March 2021. Researchers from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center released a similar map of lightning activity, based on three years of ISS LIS observations, in July 2020.”

This new map introduces two major changes:

A much accurate measurement of the lightning activity in northern and southern regions

A global view of lightning activity since it takes into account also the inter and intra clouds discharges.

The brightest areas are the most lightning prone spots worldwide : Central Africa (the Great Lakes regions), America with the Maracaibo lake that remains the most lightning struck place in the world and South East Asia (Malacca Strait)

It is commonly accepted that lightning strikes structures due to their relative height : high rise buildings, trees, isolated farms, telecom or power lines towers etc… This phenomenon is well-known: the concentration of electric charges at the edge of the structures is named the “corona effect” and it can trigger a lightning bolt.

On the contrary, individuals lightning risks are under estimated by a majority of engineers and installers, because it is considered that a person is “protected” by surrounding structures its vicinity (buildings, towers, trees etc…) Unfortunately, it exists. It is limited statistically to one case over a million but it is still a risk and it can be lethal.

The technology exists : Early Streamer Emission lightning conductors provide a larger protection radius for the structure and its surroundings. As an example, the installation of an ESE lightning rod on this construction would have protected the employee outdoor, when he crossed the courtyard. A drama would have been avoided. Very luckily, this person has been fastly taken care of by his colleagues and medical services and he is safe with no injury. Still, the CCTV footage remains scary !

Lightning activity does not spread equally over the globe. Equatorial and tropical regions are highly subjected to lightning. High temperature and very high level of humidity are creating frequent convective phenomenon, ending into thunderstorms.

Most lightning prone areas in the world are Central and South America, Central Africa and South East Asia.

Continental climate areas are facing lightning phenomenon mainly during the hot and humid season (summer).

Lastly, the northern areas represent a very minor share of worldwide lightning activity: it accounts for a mere 0.2% in 2010 according to the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) data.

Still, in an article recently published by the Geophysical Research Letter (March 2021), scientists mention a 800% increase from 2010 to 2020 !

The explanations seem to be directly related to global warming: temperature rise, ice and permafrost melting… that induces conditions favorable to convective phenomenon and thunderstorms.

Following this new paper conclusions, if the increasing risk of lightning is not taken into account, local populations and northern sea traffic might become exposed and vulnerable to the phenomenon.
